read the first episode of SEESAW

A bold and radical commentary on the destruction and trauma of imperialism, SEESAW is the story of two childhood friends coming to terms with their estrangement in the midst of a war for liberation.

Despite its gritty depiction of reality and its exploration of violence, colonialism, and war—SEESAW is, in the end, a celebration of life and love.

It finds uniqueness in its Hong Kong/Taiwan-esque style and setting and genre-blending structure.

In the midst of a war for liberation, two childhood friends struggle to come to terms with their estrangement as their past is unveiled.

BRIEF

In 1981, sixteen years after Lien believed Yin to be dead, the two are stationed together in the 201st “suicide” battalion. While Yin and Lien struggle to confront each other about what tore them apart, Lien is forced to cover Yin after they assassinate one of their own generals. Meanwhile, fourth graders Ru’an (Yin) and Na’an (Lien) prepare for military school in a South Nujianese settler-colony town. While Ru’an dreams of the glory of a soldier, Na’an is doubtful and resists quietly.

Now, Yin—for reasons unbeknownst to Lien—is now on the hunt for the Subject in a ploy to overthrow both countries colonizing their home. Meanwhile, Lien battles with her identity: she must choose between serving the colonial empire or losing her mother. As the war for liberation goes on, Yin and Lien—struggling to come to terms with everything—find themselves slowly realizing their feelings for each other.
